OUR PRINCIPALS

Dr. Jeffrey A. Thornton graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a Master’s degree in earth sciences, with an emphasis on nutrient dynamics in estuaries, and holds a PhD in resource ecology from the University of Zimbabwe. He is a registered Professional Hydrologist in the State of Wisconsin (USA) and a Certified Lake Manager. Jeff has held a number of positions with various governmental and quasi-governmental agencies in southern Africa and North America, and has been particularly active in the areas of water resource and urban planning, lake restoration and warm water reservoir limnology. He has published a number of books and articles on these topics, and has served on a number of local, national and international committees and advisory bodies. In addition, Jeff has managed the preparation of more than thirty lake management plans for Wisconsin lakes, including aquatic plant management plans, recreational use plans, and comprehensive lake plans.

LeAnn S. Colburn graduated from Mississippi State University with a Master’s degree in soil science. Principal areas of study involved soil fertility and nutrient management. She is a registered Professional Soil Scientist in the State of Wisconsin, as well as a Certified Soil Erosion Inspector, and an ARCPACS Certified Professional Soil Scientist. She studied the impacts of phosphorus loading to an agricultural system utilizing dairy effluent at the University of Florida. After leaving Florida, she became skilled at soil interpretation, mapping, and classification while employed by the USDA as a soil scientist. She further sharpened her skills as an environmental specialist while working for the Southeast Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission, focusing on areas such as agricultural erosion, construction site erosion, nutrient management, and wetland boundary determination. Most recently, she worked as a researcher for the University of Wisconsin studying the potential of phytoremediation in lead contaminated soils.

OUR PARTNERING ORGANIZATION'S SPECIALISTS

Thomas J. Girolamo (Eco-Building and Forestry, LLC) graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a Bachelors of Science degree in forestry; emphasis in Forest Management and Urban Forestry. He is also a graduate from the Permaculture Research Institute with a Certificate in Permaculture Design. He is recognized as a Midwest expert in sustainable landscape design and installation. Thomas has received various awards for his work, has written two manuals on sustainable landscapes, holds trademarks on a variety of related products, and is a sought after speaker and workshop presenter. He has been previously employed as a city arborist, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Forest Service. He started his own company in 1988 and is the founder of Eco-Building and Forestry, LLC.
